Outdoor workers face serious risks when exposed to cold weather. Per OSHA, “cold stress” can lead to dangerous conditions including Hypothermia, Frostbite, trench foot or other cold-related injuries when cold and wind chill remove heat from the body faster than it can be replaced.
Employers are required to take preventive action to reduce these hazards. H.E.L.P. Safety Services recommends training workers to recognize early symptoms such as shivering, numbness or confusion and to provide frequent warm-up breaks, heated shelter access, and proper protective clothing. Layered, moisture-wicking clothing, insulated gloves and boots, and head/face protection all help reduce heat loss.
For workers in construction, maintenance or industrial settings, cold-weather hazards require proactive planning. Cold stress prevention and cold-conditions procedures should be integrated into site safety protocols, including weather monitoring, work-rest scheduling, use of buddy systems, and ensuring workers have access to warm shelter and hydration to safeguard their health.
