An injured worker was pulled from a utility tunnel at a construction site on Heron Road Friday.
Firefighters were called to the city’s south end around 11:20 a.m. and when they arrived on scene they confirmed the worker was trapped approximately 10 feet below and was unable to self-rescue.
“The worker had been removing temporary wooden barriers covering a trench cut into the tunnel’s ceiling at ground level,” Ottawa Fire Services said in a post on X. “While doing so, he fell approximately 10 feet through the opening and landed on his back.”
Crews determined the safest way to extricate the worker was by lifting vertically through an uncovered opening. A rope system was set up to rescue the worker with assistance from Ottawa Paramedics.
The worker was left in the care of paramedics to be assessed.
There is no word on the severity of injuries at this time.
